Tom called his first “tip” when a freshman in high school and started calling “hoedown” dances on a regular schedule in 1959. In the late 1970’s Tom began teaching western square dancing to 4-H’ers and actively began calling for square dance clubs in the mid 1980’s. Tom has called in 14 states for over 115 different clubs.
Tom calls one night party dances, lessons, workshops, weekends and dance from basic thru A-2, averaging nearly 200 dates per year. He has a strong local program, current conducting ‘new dancer’ session for 4 clubs.
Tom has been on the staff at the Ohio Square Dance Convention every year since 1985, has called at 10 National Conventions and has served as a panelist at the last 6 Conventions.
Tom is an active member of CALLERLAB, currently serving on the Board of Governors. He is chairman of the R.P.M. (Recruit, Promote, Maintain) Committee and serves on the Mainstream Committee. Tom writes the monthly article On the Record – Squares for the American Square Dance Magazine. In 1995 and in 2001 Tom was selected as the Akron (OH) Square and Round Dance Federation “Honor Caller of the Year”.
Tom’s love of calling is evident by his enthusiasm displayed behind the mike. His smooth flowing and interesting choreography compliments his popular singing and quick wit. Tom’s dedication to making his dances FUN keeps bringing the dancers back week after week.
Tom's newest recordings on Rawhide Records are "There's A Star Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere" and "Walkin' My Baby Back Home", available next month.
